Dovre Mountain Area

Report from a 7 days hike to the Dovre and Skrymtheimen mountain area. It was a round trip that started and ended at Kongsvoll.

Evening at Gammelsetra in Linndalen

The trip startet at Kongsvoll, shortly north of Hjerkinn. In brief the route followed this trail: First day was an easy hike to Reinheim, where I stumbled across some musk oxen that were gracing near the path. Next day I scaled Snøhetta, and went down on the north side to Åmotdalshytta. Third day was a very, very long hike to Grøvudalshytta. Fortunately I had very nice weather conditions. Fourth day was an easy hike to Gammelsetra in Linndalen, a very nice place for a stay. Fifth day was yet another very long hike, first to Loennechenbua, then to Åmotdalshytta. Sixth day through Svånådalen around Snøhetta, first to Snøheim and then to Reinheim. Last day was an easy hike back to Kongsvoll.

Warning: Beware of the musk oxen when hiking in the Dovre area. Approaching a musk ox may be hasardous to your health. There have been fatal encounters, you have been warned.

Scaling Snøhetta

Snøhetta is the highest mountain in the Dovre area and is easily seen from the E6 highway that passes across Dovre. A common hiking route is from Reinheim. I used approx. 3 hours until I stood at the summit. I descended on the north side down to Åmotdalshytta where I spent the night.

A long hike to Grøvudalen

My plan for the day was to hike westwards to Grøvudalen. I knew very well that it was going to be a very, very long hike, which it indeed turned out to be. But as long as the weather was nice, it was an enjoyable hike. I would not repeat this hike in bad weather.

To Gammelsetra

The hike for the day was a rather short one, as compared to the hike the previous day. My goal was to reach Gammelsetra in Linndalen, a very nice place. Here you will find several well preserved old buildings, see the picture above.

To Loennechenbua and to Åmotdalshytta

Another day with a very long hike. First up to a small stone hut called Loennechenbua. This stone hut has saved the lives of many people who has met bad weather conditions here. As the weather was nice, I had no need to stay so I continued to Åmotdalshytta.

Through Svånådalen around Snøhetta

The hike from Åmotdalshytta through Svånådalen is partly filled with rocks, stones, and rocks. Half of the day I was hiking and climbing on and between rocks. Luckily, the second half was more enjoyable. I passed the old hut Snøheim before continuing to Reinheim. Next day an easy hike back to Kongsvoll.
