Inside a glacier

[Entrance to Speilsalen]

This is a picture from September 2003. I am at the base of a small glacier in Trollheimen, a mountain area close to the ski resort village of Oppdal. Occasionally, once every ten years or so, an opening occurs in this glacier, and forms a room. It's often referred to as the Speilsalen - Mirror Room - but its name is actually Blåsalen - Blue Room - as named by the famous adventurer and archeologist Thor Heyerdahl. He stayed up here in wintertime around 1935.

In the later years the cave has been open every year, usually in late summer and autumn. You should note, however, that it is dangerous to be close to a glacier. Don't ever walk or go close to a glacier. You hear movements in the glacier all the time. And that is what makes it dangerous, the glacier is in constant movement.

[Pic: My favourite mountain area]

This picture shows the starting point for the 3-hour hike to the Speilsalen (6-7 hours return hike). It is taken on a clear autumn day in September. This is my favourite area for mountain hiking, the scenery is very beautiful. The mountain on the other side of the lake is called Okla. The view from the summit is just amazingly beautiful. I've been there, of course.

If you like, you may join me for a photo adventure up to Speilsalen. It is a 3-4 hour hike with approx 750 meters altitude up to Speilsalen. I must warn you that entering the cave may be fatal to your health. Large blocks of ice may fall down any time. You have been warned.
