From my vacation to the Lofoten Islands. I used Bodø as starting point, then by ferry to Moskenes. From Moskenes by car eastwards along all the Lofoten islands. Lofoten is a very nice place to visit, especially when the weather is nice. |

A short recap: I started in Bodø where I visited the Saltstraumen tidal current. I also paid a visit to the island of Kjerringøy (these Norwegian names are almost impossible to pronounce for English speakers). From Bodø by ferry to Moskenes in the westernmost islands of Lofoten, with Å, Sørvågen, and Reine as highlights. After spending some days in Leknes I headed east towards Harstad and Narvik, then on to Fauske, and finally back to Bodø again. |
Photos from the now restored merchant's place on Kjerringøy, a small island east of Bodø. Because of its beauty this place is often used as film location depicting Norwegian scenery in the 1800's.
When in Bodø one must pay a visit to Saltstraumen, one of the strongest tidal currents in the world.
From Bodø I took the ferry to Moskenes. It's a 3-4 hour trip, nothing much to see during the voyage, except seeing the magnificent Lofoten Wall coming closer and closer.
Å (pronounced like the -au- in Paul) is the westernmost part in Lofoten that is reachable by car. A curiosity is the Stockfish Museum.
Reine is situated between the mountains and the sea and is a magificent and beautiful little fishing village. Here you will find nice photo opportunites virtually everywhere.
Ballstad is located a short distance south of Leknes. Here you can find a nice restaurant situated seaside amidst fishing boats and rorbu cabins. It's called Havets Helter (Heroes of the Sea). You can virtually sit at a table by the restaurant and use your own fishing rod to catch some fish.
Miscellaneous photos, from a beach at Ramberg, from the summit of Offersøykammen near Leknes, some photos from Eggum, and a couple of photos of cormorants. |
